We're moving forward with plans to host our Out of the Darkness Community Walks in person beginning fall 2021. The health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers will be our top priorities as we work with local authorities to make decisions about event details, and we'll continue to offer options to participate online and in your neighborhood.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to be there for one another and take steps to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide.

Register today to stay up to date on the latest news and announcements for the Twin Cities Walk.

Why Register?

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. The global pandemic has impacted the emotional and economic well-being of many individuals and families, and left many of us to manage a variety of emotions, including feelings of uncertainty. We also know increases in suicide are not a foregone conclusion if we act now to mitigate risk and support the mental health of our friends, families, and neighbors. But we need your help. Every dollar you raise through the Out of the Darkness Walks allows AFSP to invest in life-saving research, education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.

It’s more important than ever for us to stay connected. Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:

  1. You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
  2. We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
  3. Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.

Register Today and help save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

About the Walk

We are looking forward to seeing you at the 2021 Twin Cities Out of the Darkness Walk. The health and safety of all of our walk volunteers and participants is our top priority. To that end, this years walk will look different than in years past. Outlined below are a few of those changes. Now, more than ever, it is important to be there for one another, to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide - but we must do it safely.

All registration will be on-line. Please make every effort to register and post donations BEFORE the walk, on-line. For those that are unable to register in advance there will be QR codes placed around the event that will take you to a mobile friendly and simplified registration process. If you have checks or cash to bring on the day of the event, we will have a small station under the pavilion to collect those donations.

2021 Walk t-shirts will still be available to pick up on Sunday for those that have raised $150 by the day of the walk.

You can arrive any time between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (event closes at 2:00 p.m.)

You can begin the walk at any time. Once you and your team have arrived and everyone is set, you can begin walking the three mile 2021 memorial rout around Lake Como. The path will be clearly marked and open from 9 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

No formal program. This year we will not have a formal program from the stage. There will be music playing and looped announcements as folks arrive. As always, free Memorial Beads will be available that day.

There will be food trucks with some picnic tables and educational booths, but there will be no children’s activities.

Masks are encouraged, but not required. There will be plenty of hand sanitizer and disposable masks for you on location.

Leashed, well-behaved dogs are still welcome

Activities of Hope and Healing

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.

The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
