Join us for the Niantic Out of the Darkness Walk AND The Bright Music Festival!
We're so excited not only to be moving forward with plans to host Niantic Out of the Darkness Community Walks in person on September 19th but also that The Bright Music Festival will be joining us! ( more on the festival below!)
We are excited to be hosting a full walk in person, with an opening ceremony, activity tables, Honor Beads and more, the health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers will be our top priorities as we work with local authorities to make decisions about event details. We'll continue to monitor Covid protocols state and town- wide and will update this page. Currently, the are no mask mandates - although they are recommended - and we while will not ask for proof of vaccination, we do ask that if you are not feeling well to please stay home and perhaps join one of other walks ( afsp.org/cttogether) when you are feeling better!
Now, more than ever, it’s important to be there for one another and take steps to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide.
We will be walking out and back along the boardwalk - this is a scenic, flat 2 mile out round trip. It's very easy to turn around at any time during the walk should you not want to walk the entire distance. All levels of fitness are welcome - this is not a race or a timed event, just walk at your own pace. Unfortunately, dogs and other pets are not allowed on the Boardwalk - you make bring leashed dogs to the park but please have someone hold them when you are walking as they are not allowed on the boardwalk.
This year, we are so excited to be partnering with The Bright Music Festival:
Many people who excel in the creative arts also struggle with depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. The Bright Music Festival lets the talents of young adults in our community shine while promoting mental wellness and suicide prevention. Bright showcases live music by popular local bands and spoken-word poetry along with free activities to help you relax and reflect. Bright is a family-friendly festival held in the summer each year at McCook Point Park.
Walk in the Niantic Out of the Darkness Walk and then spend a wonderful afternoon at the beach, enjoy live music, and de-stigmatize the conversation around mental health in a comfortable, safe, and relaxed environment.

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. The global pandemic has impacted the emotional and economic well-being of many individuals and families, and left many of us to manage a variety of emotions, including feelings of uncertainty. We also know increases in suicide are not a foregone conclusion if we act now to mitigate risk and support the mental health of our friends, families, and neighbors. But we need your help. Every dollar you raise through the Out of the Darkness Walks allows AFSP to invest in life-saving research, education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.

Activities of Hope and Healing
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.
The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
