We're moving forward with plans to host our Out of the Darkness Community Walks in person beginning fall 2021. The health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers will be our top priorities as we work with local authorities to make decisions about event details, and we'll continue to offer options to participate online and in your neighborhood.
Now, more than ever, it’s important to be there for one another and take steps to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide.
Register today to stay up to date on the latest news and announcements for the Metro Detroit Walk.
Registration is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted until December 31st.
Having trouble registering? Click here to view a step-by-step guide. Refer to page 1 if you’re registering yourself or page 5 if you’re registering someone else through your own account. Be sure to also check out some of the Frequently Asked Questions on page 10.
If you’ve already registered and would like to either create a new team or join an existing one, log into your AFSP account and click on the “change team membership” option on the right hand side of your dashboard tab (on mobile you’ll need to click “dashboard” first).
Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. The global pandemic has impacted the emotional and economic well-being of many individuals and families, and left many of us to manage a variety of emotions, including feelings of uncertainty. We also know increases in suicide are not a foregone conclusion if we act now to mitigate risk and support the mental health of our friends, families, and neighbors. But we need your help. Every dollar you raise through the Out of the Darkness Walks allows AFSP to invest in life-saving research, education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.

Activities of Hope and Healing
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.
Send us your photo (to: email@example.com) by 10/13/2021 to be displayed in the memory area or bring your own to be hung up and displayed. Please note, you must pick up your photos by the end of the event if you wish to take them home. Photos not picked up at the end of the event will be discarded.
Make sure to stop by our Resource & Wellness Area, where we will have information from local organizations. There will be tons of great information here for you!
We will have plenty of AFSP goodies for sale at our official AFSP Merchandise Tent, with all proceeds going directly back to our walk! Make sure to stop by! Cash and credit cards accepted.
Kids Care Zone
We will have plenty of FREE family friendly activities, including resources for parents and fun for the kiddos! Thank you Susie Q's Kids for sponsoring this year's Kids Care Zone! https://susieqskids.org/
Paws for Prevention
Our four legged friends can be serious about prevention too! Friendly leashed dogs are welcome at our walk! Make sure to swing by our Paws for Prevention area, where for $10 you will receive an AFSP dog bandanna and be entered to win a basket filled with goodies, worth over $100!
Our walk route is approximately 5k (3 miles), winding through the beautiful neighborhoods of Ferndale east of Woodward. This route is wheelchair/stroller accessible. Please note that participation in the walk itself, is optional. If you would prefer to stay back we will have plenty of activities to keep you busy!
