Thank you so much to everyone for joining us on Saturday, September 18th for our annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Out of the Darkness Walk!  We are so grateful for the amazing support from all of our walkers, volunteers, and sponsors! You truly made this year a wonderful success!

Counting down until the Mississippi Gulf Coast Walk!


More than ever, our mission to save lives remains our priority, and we cannot do this work without you. Please read below for important event updates and download our official walk guide here. The walk committee appreciates your support and flexibility with ongoing planning!

Registration: To keep our volunteers and walkers safe, day-of event registration will be available via QR codeIf you have pre-registered for the event, you do not need to check-in.  If you need to register at the event, you can scan the QR code present at registration by using your smart phone's camera. Please spread the word and encourage your team members to register online before the event. We will have QR codes around venue for walkers to register the day of the event. Volunteers will be available to assist walkers who do not have smart phones or prefer paper registration.

Donations: Please donate online or mail your donations before the walk to AFSP using our offline donation form (download here). Be sure to include the walker and team name. Donations can be turned in at registration. Donations can also be made online using the QR codes available at the event. 

T-shirts: There's still time to qualify for an event t-shirt! Raise $150 or more by 10/30 and you'll get an official 2021 t-shirt mailed directly to you! Register today and ask 15 friends for $10 or more. To streamline efforts, t-shirts will be mailed directly to for qualifying participants (those who raise $150 or more by 10/30). No t-shirts will be available at the walk. Thank you for your understanding!

COVID Safety Guidelines: 

In an effort to keep our community safe, we will be implementing the following COVID-19 safety guidelines: 

  • Maintaining a minimum of 6 feet distance between you and individuals outside of your home. 
  • Encouraging the use of masks. Masks will be available at check-in.  
  • Hand sanitizer stations around the event. 

Please participate virtually at home if any of the following apply:  

  • You have been exposed to COVID-19/have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, the flu, or has exhibited COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms within the last 14 days.
  • You have any COVID-19 symptoms or flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose or congestion, muscle aches or fatigue, headache, new loss of taste or smell, nausea or vomiting, etc.), or if you're not feeling well.

What to Bring:  

  • Masks are encouraged.
  • Sunscreen. 
  • Water bottle.
  • Phone.
  • Pop-up tent and chairs for your team.

  • Parking is available in the lots off of Beach Blvd. through Gate 1. 
  • Mississippi Coast Coliseum is located at 2350 Beach Blvd., Biloxi, MS. Enter through Gate 1 off of Beach Blvd. Drive. Click here for turn-by-turn directions.

If you’ve already registered and would like to either create a new team or join an existing one, log into your AFSP account and click on the “change team membership” option on the right hand side of your dashboard tab (on mobile you’ll need to click “dashboard” first). 

Why Register?

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. Your safety and well-being will always be our top priority, and while we remain hopeful that we'll be able to gather in person once again this fall, we are closely monitoring CDC and local guidelines and will continue to share updates in the coming weeks and months.

Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:

  1. You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
  2. We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
  3. Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.


Raise $150 by 09/18/2021 and receive an official Out of the Darkness T-shirt!  In an effort to keep walkers and volunteers safe at our events, AFSP will mail all t-shirts to walkers who have raised $150 or more. T-shirts will not be available for pick-up at the event. Please let us know if you have any questions. We truly appreciate your understanding.

About the Walk

The walk begins at the south entrance of the Coliseums parking lot. We will cross over Highway 90 to the boardwalk and walk East on the boardwalk until the boardwalk ends. We will then turn around and walk back to the Coliseum. The total distance is 1.5 miles. (Restroom facilities will be available inside the Coliseum.)

Free parking will be available at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.


We welcome your well behaved furry friends. Raise a paw for prevention! Each $10 Paws for Prevention donation supports AFSP's mission and comes with an official AFSP doggy bandana and one ticket for the pet prize giveaway. Ticket's are $1 each or $5 for 6 for those registering your pet or anyone without a furry friend at the Walk. Be sure to visit the Paw for Prevention tent. Raffle numbers will be announced after the Walk.

  Follow us on Twitter! If you are on Twitter, Tweet about the event. Don’t forget to add #outofthedarkness to your tweets!

Follow us on Instagram! Share and tag your photos with #outofthedarkness! Spread the word and ask for support by sharing the videos and social shares in the participant hub.

There are many more social media outlets, please use any and all to help promote the event.  One of the best ways to raise awareness and increase understanding is by sharing your story.

Activities of Hope and Healing


Be sure to check in at the registration table and receive your free raffle ticket. TEN registered participants will receive a goody bag with AFSP swag. Must be present to win. Raffle numbers will be announced after the Walk - hold on to those tickets!

Selfie Contest

Take a selfie and win a prize! During the event only, post a selfie on social media using our Walk hashtag and you could be a winner! The hashtag will be given when you register/check-in at the Walk. Selfies can include teams and the more original the better! Visit the Photo Op tent to use our photo props. The winner will be announced after the Walk. 

Push-up Challenge

Join us in recognizing our Veterans in doing the 22 Kill Push-up Challenge before the Walk begins. Everyone is invited to participate. 

Silent Auction

NEW THIS YEAR - Visit our Silent Auction tent and place your bids!

Tent Decorating

We encourage each team to bring out a decorated Team canopy! Feel free to get creative and make a statement! There will be judging and prizes given away after the Walk. 

Walk Banner

The team who raises the most money will begin the Walk, holding the Mississippi Gulf Coast Out of the Darkness Community Walk banner. This team will be recognized during the opening ceremony. 

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.


The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
