Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Howard County Walk
IMPORTANT UPDATE (8/31/21): We will be moving to a staggered arrival format due to COVID-19 concerns. Registered teams will arrive at pre-assigned times throughout the morning, enjoy various event activities, explore resource vendors, and then go on a walk. There will not be a formal Opening Ceremony. Teams will be contacted closer to the event date about arrival times. We appreciate your support and flexibility with ongoing planning!
Note from the Inner Arbor Trust Venue: All guests over 2 years old must wear a mask covering their mouth and nose while in line to enter, for the restroom, registration, vendors, but are not required at any other time. Guests will be required to stay distanced from those outside their household or pod. Unvaccinated guests are asked to wear masks if a 6-ft distance is hard to maintain or when space is crowded. All guests will be asked to self-screen for signs of Covid-19 before entering, and guests must self-monitor and report any Covid-19 diagnosis within 14 days of attending an event. Dogs welcome.

We're moving forward with plans to host our Out of the Darkness Community Walks in person beginning fall 2021. The health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers will be our top priorities as we work with local authorities to make decisions about event details, and we'll continue to offer options to participate online and in your neighborhood.
Now, more than ever, it’s important to be there for one another and take steps to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide.

Registration is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted until December 31st.
Preparing for Walk Day
Those who pre-register on this website, DO NOT have to check-in on the day of. If anyone is coming with you to the walk, please have them register ahead of time, or you may register them yourself!
For those who do not-preregister, QR codes to register and donate will be at the Walk, but pre-registration is encouraged.
We strongly encourage everyone to ask your supporters to donate online whenever possible. We kindly ask you to mail checks in ahead of time (or by December 31 at the latest) to AFSP Maryland, PO Box 169, Annapolis, MD 21401 and include and Offline Donation Form.
Things to bring to the walk:
- your smartphone
- water (we will not provide water or snacks)
We are doing all we can to provide a safe environment for you, our volunteers, and our staff! Anything you can do to help us would be greatly appreciated.
- If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last two weeks, please do not attend the walk
- Consider wearing a mask where social-distancing is not possible or when communicating with volunteers and resource vendors in the registration area
- Practice safe distancing from those outside of those you are in regular contact with
- We will have masks available, if you forgot yours or need additional ones
- Hand-sanitizer will be available at the registration area

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. The global pandemic has impacted the emotional and economic well-being of many individuals and families, and left many of us to manage a variety of emotions, including feelings of uncertainty. It’s more important than ever for us to stay connected. Though there are many unknowns, there are a few things we know for sure:
- You belong to a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.
- We remain dedicated to providing you with opportunities to connect, heal, share stories, create impact, and show you that you are not alone.
- Mental Health and suicide prevention are more important than ever, and we’re confident that with your help we can reach more people than ever before.

We welcome non-profits and businesses to participate on the day of the walk as resources vendors. Interested parties must apply through this APPLICATION FORM. As a vendor, your message must align with AFSP's mission to saves lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.
The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
