We're moving forward with plans to host our Out of the Darkness Community Walks in person beginning fall 2021. The health and safety of our participants, staff and volunteers will be our top priorities as we work with local authorities to make decisions about event details, and we'll continue to offer options to participate online and in your neighborhood.
Now, more than ever, it’s important to be there for one another and take steps to safeguard our mental health and prevent suicide.

Registration is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted until December 31st.
Walk Details- In-person: We walk on Sunday, September 26th at the Northwest parking lot of the Capitol building. Activities start at 12:00 pm and the Opening Ceremony begins at 2:00 pm. All funds raised support mental health research, prevention education, advocacy, and support for loss survivors. There is not a fee to register, but anyone who raises $150 by September 26th will receive an Out of the Darkness T-shirt!
Walk Details- Virtual: If you can’t make it to the capitol building, we invite walkers and teams to safely walk in neighborhoods and parks across our community! This is an opportunity to bring our messages of hope and awareness to the places we call home, so carry your Honor & Remembrance signs, wear your OOTD walk t-shirts and beads with pride, and share your experiences on social media!
Virtual Closing Ceremony- We invite all virtual and in-person walkers to attend the Out of the Darkness State-Wide Closing Ceremony on Saturday, October 16th at 10 am, a day of virtual Out of the Darkness activities.
No matter if you are virtual or in person, remember we are always together to fight suicide.
Day of Schedule for our in-person portion of the walk:
12:00: AFSP Pop-Up Shop, Honor Beads and Team Photos begin, T-shirt pick up (for walkers who raise $150 and over!) Memory Wall, and other activities open. Food Trucks will be open for you to purchase lunch if you get hungry.
1:00: Music begins and all activities will be open.
2:00: Opening Ceremony begins and then we walk! It will be an afternoon full of hope!
Friendly leashed dogs with responsible humans are also invited to walk with us! You can also purchase your AFSP doggy bandanna at the pop-up shop!
We will be walking after the Opening Ceremony that begins at 2:00 pm. This is our walking route.
Healing Activities: We invite you to print a picture, poem, something that reminds you of your loved one to add to our memory wall! Please do not bring your original copy as we will be outside.

Our community has always been the heart of the Out of the Darkness Walks. The global pandemic has impacted the emotional and economic well-being of many individuals and families, and left many of us to manage a variety of emotions, including feelings of uncertainty. We also know increases in suicide are not a foregone conclusion if we act now to mitigate risk and support the mental health of our friends, families, and neighbors. But we need your help. Every dollar you raise through the Out of the Darkness Walks allows AFSP to invest in life-saving research, education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.

Activities of Hope and Healing
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.
The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
