Remember, in addition to fundraising online, you will be able to turn in additional cash or check donations at the registration table the day of the Walk (if happening in person).
— Donations can be made to a team, the T-shirt and other incentives are based only on INDIVIDUAL fundraising.

Activities of Hope & Healing
On walk day, registration will start at 9:30am on the Nicholson Patio. Opening Ceremony will take place at 10:30am, and the Color Run/Walk will begin at 11:00am.
After the walk, stick around for free food (from Revival Chili, Hot Bunz, and Dad's Pub & Grub food trucks) and our dance Party for Prevention on the Nicholson Patio/Lawn. Participants should also plan to swing by the Moxie Selfie Station & Photo Booth to capture a few colorful memories!

Color Walk/Run FAQs
What’s the timeline for the day?
Here’s the line up of the day’s events:
9:30-10:30 am - Registration (Sign in and grab your swag bag!)
10:30 am - Opening Ceremony
11:00 am - Color Walk/Run
11:30 am-1:30 pm - Dance Party for Prevention, Moxie Events Selfie Station/Photo Booth, Food Trucks!
How long is the route?
This year’s route is approximately a mile long. The route is entirely on campus and volunteers will be placed along the way to direct walkers/runners. Come prepared for a few small hills, too! (It wouldn’t be an RMU walk/run without a few small signature hills, right?!)
What should I wear/bring?
There will be a few color blast stations throughout the route, so come dressed in your brightest whites (if you want to proudly display the color)! Bonus points if you wear funky socks, tutus, bandanas, and other costume attire. Even though the color powder is non-toxic/safe, participants can also bring sunglasses (to minimize powder contact), a change of clothes, and/or a towel to minimize color transfer for the car ride home.
Is the color powder safe? Will it come out of my clothes?
The color powder used at the color blast stations is 100% FD&C and/or D&C approved and is gluten free (and does not contain dairy, nuts, wheat, soy, or other common allergens). Powder will wash out of most clothing but can stain some materials. 100% cotton clothing is recommended and typical machine washing with stain remover removes the stains. We recommend removing excess powder from clothing before washing and/or applying water. Dancing after the walk at our Party for Prevention is a perfect way to shake some of the excess powder off!
What’s happening after the walk?
After the walk/run, stick around for our Party for Prevention! Participants can enjoy free food from Revival Chili, Dad’s Pub & Grub, and Hot Bunz food trucks. We’ll also have a dance party on the lawn and a premier Moxie Events selfie station/photo booth!
What is the mask policy?
This year’s event is taking place exclusively outside, so masking isn’t required. Should guests need to enter a building to use the restroom, masking is optional. Changes to this policy will be posted on the doors to buildings.
Where can guests park?
Guests to RMU may park in the UPMC upper or lower lots. Volunteers will be on site to help direct visitors to parking lots.
Is there a non-color route?
Unfortunately, there won’t be a non-color route. Individuals that would prefer not to participate in the experience can enjoy the selfie station/photo booth and DJ on Nicholson patio while the walk/run takes place.
Do I have to register for the walk, or can I just show up?
All participants will be required to check-in at registration before the event, but individuals who did not pre-register will be able to register that morning. Individuals, however, are encouraged to pre-register at afsp.org/RMU.
What happens if it rains on walk day?
Our event will go off rain or shine! So, toss on the poncho and prepare to have some serious fun!
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.
There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.
The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.
Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.
When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.
As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
