Welcome to the Out of the Darkness

Iowa State University Campus Walk

Thank you for registering for the ISU Out of the Darkness Walk. We look forward to walking with you on Saturday to raise awareness of suicide prevention. Below are additional details for the event.

Check-In: Check-in and day of registration will begin at 9:30 am. We ask that participants try to arrive by 9:50 am at the latest, in order to allow ample time for check-in prior to our event beginning. Check-in will be located inside STATE GYM. Please see the attached map below to see where this is located.

Weather: Check-in and registration will be inside STATE GYM. Based on whether at the start of the event, we will either walk the outside route or stay inside the gym facility.

Parking: You may park in most campus lots on Saturdays. You will see many lots say permit required Monday-Friday, and these are all free lots on Saturdays. There are also paid spots (e.g., Memorial Union Parking Garage).  See map

Event: The event will begin with a speaker before we start the walk. We welcome people from the ISU and Ames community. Please leave pets at home- No pets are allowed inside ISU facilities.

Facebook: If you are registered, feel free to RSVP to our Facebook event and/or share the event as well. This is a helpful way to continue to spread the word! You can find us here:

We look forward to seeing you all there! Additionally, there is still time to earn some of the incentives, so we encourage you to continue seeking donations for this important cause.

Activities of Hope & Healing

Honor Beads

Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental health condition can sometimes feel as if no one understands what you are going through. Wearing honor beads the day of the walk is a way to show each other that we are all connected to the cause, and that no one is alone.

There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above.

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, support, and a walk that unites a campus and community – a time to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and our loved ones.

Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until June 30th.

When you walk in the Out of the Darkness Walks, you join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow AFSP to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

As the leader in the fight against suicide, and thanks to walkers like you from cities across the country, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025.
