Walk to Fight Suicide
Many people’s introduction to AFSP comes through our Out of the Darkness Community Walks, taking place in cities nationwide. Through these events, those affected by suicide and those who support them raise awareness and much-needed funds for our mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide, strongly sending the message that suicide can be prevented and that no one is alone.
AFSP is dedicated to creating a culture that’s smart about mental health through education, loss and healing support, advocacy, and research. As a voluntary organization, our grassroots efforts engage families, mental health professionals, community and local business leaders, school administrators, and others interested in preventing suicide.

FundraiseRegister! There is no fee or fundraising minimum. Share your fundraising page link on social media, via text, or by email. Double Your Impact with Matching Gifts! Matching gifts are when companies "match" a charitable gift an employee makes. Reach out to your network to let everyone know that they may be able to double their contribution if their employer has a matching gift program. Find out if your company has a matching gift policy.

Is there a registration fee? No. There is no registration fee or fundraising minimum to participate. We strongly encourage each participant to set a $150 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's work to stop suicide and receive the official walk t-shirt! Is there a fundraising minimum? No, but we strongly encourage all participants to set a $150 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's mission, and so they can earn an official walk t-shirt! Can I register at the Walk? Yes! You can register or donate in person at the Walk by scanning a QR code. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st. What if it rains? The event is rain or shine and would only be canceled in the instance of severe weather that would compromise the safety of our guests. Is the event family-friendly? Yes! We will have games and activities to keep your little ones entertained. While the Walk route is paved, it does have some hills. Also, there may be unforeseen obstructions along the walk route beyond our control (e.g. construction detours). Are dogs allowed? Yes! Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome. Can I bring my own table, tent, or chairs to the event? No. However, you do have the opportunity to earn a team table and/or tent through AFSP-offered Team & Walker Rewards - 2024 Rewards Details Coming Soon! We will have plenty of chairs at the event for those who need seating accommodations. |
How do I make an offline donation? To send a donation by check, please complete the Offline Donation Form and send it with your check to the address provided.
If I raise enough money, will my whole team get a shirt? No. The event shirts are only given to individuals who raise $150 by the day of the event. If your whole team wants a shirt, each member must raise $150. Any must-have items I should bring? We recommend comfy shoes, bug spray, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, offline donations (to be turned in), and cash or credit card to make a donation or purchase AFSP swag! How do I change my team status? If you're already registered and looking to create a new team or join an existing one, simply log into your account and click "change team membership". If I come alone, will someone walk with me? Will there be mental health professionals at the event? There will be a "Care Team" of volunteer mental health professionals who'll be on-site to talk to anyone who wants or needs support. You can find them in the "Hope & Healing" area or walking around the event. They will be wearing purple t-shirts that say "Care Team: Want to Talk?" |
What is the Walk route? The Walk route is approximately 3.5 miles, paved, and there as some steep hills. See Walk Route with Turn-by-Turn Directions & Elevation. Will there be refreshments available? Complimentary water and light snacks will be provided by AFSP for volunteers and registered participants only. Will there be restrooms on-site? Yes! There are indoor restrooms on-site, behind Harris Pavilion. Is there public transportation to the venue? See the City of Manassas' Getting Around website for public transportation information and schedules. What parking is available? See the City of Manassas' website for Downtown Parking Info & Map. Accessibility Info? The pre-walk event areas and Walk route are ADA-compliant. Also, there may be unforeseen obstructions along the walk route beyond our control (e.g.: construction detours). See the Walk Route map and details listed above. An ASL interpreter will be on stage for the Opening Ceremony. Reserved seating will be offered in front of the stage for the Opening Ceremonies for those with accessibility needs. Walk Buddies will be available to accompany anyone who needs assistance navigating the walk route. Additional info about the venue can be found on the City of Manassas' Harris Pavilion website.
