Did you know Maureen McDonald Hannon?
I did. She was my mom.
For over ten years my mother supported me at the yearly Buffalo Out of the Darkness walk. In the beginning, she gave me my first donations and drove me to the walk. Then, she started walking with me. Not long after that, she suggested to her boss that their organization, Spectrum Health and Human Services, start participating in the event. They did...and they still do.
Maureen passed away Christmas night, 2022, after an 8 month battle with illness. She was a dedicated teacher and Registered Nurse, and retired from Spectrum after years of helping those with mental health issues and addiction. While she did not die from suicide, this year our team walks in honor of her contributions to the mental health community.
And, on a personal note, I walk for her- as the woman who has singlehandedly saved my life more times than I can count.
