*Pre-registered participants will no longer need to check-in at the Walk, so we encourage you to register, invite friends, fundraise, and donate in advance to make your day-of event experience as safe and streamlined as possible! Be sure to read items marked UPDATE and check back for any last minute changes.

Individual walkers and small groups (2-3 people) may arrive any time! Questions/requests for your team - email here.

Here’s how you access the AFSP Out of the Darkness station: 

  • Download the Audacy app
  • Search AFSP, click on the “AFSP Out of the Darkness” station & listen!
  • It’s be curated by our music team to be an uplifting soundtrack to support the walk
  • There are about 4 hours of songs – a mix of widely known pop, adult contemporary, rock hits

Need honor beads for your virtual walk or team gathering? Email here to arrange pickup in the Northtowns: Thurs 9/16 between 3-8pm, or Fri 9/17 between 12-7pm.

Will you help save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide?

UPDATE: The Out of the Darkness Buffalo Walk is a special event that provides community, connection, healing, and hope for survivors of suicide loss and those with lived experience.

We are moving forward with plans to host the walk in-person on Saturday, September 18th, 2021. Teams and individual walkers can arrive between 8:30am-1:30pm and there will NOT be a formal Opening Ceremony.

By registering, you are joining a strong community united in an effort to fight suicide while showing up for yourself, recognizing and honoring those you love, raising awareness, educating communities, supporting one another, and sharing hope.

Every dollar you raise through the Buffalo Walk allows AFSP to invest in life-saving research, education, advocacy, and support for those impacted by suicide.

Registration & Walk FAQs

Is there a registration fee?
No, there is no registration fee to participate, but as a fundraising event we encourage you to try and solicit donations in your community!

Do we have to leave in 20 minutes?
No, there is not a set departure time for teams, just arrivals. We are using spread-out arrival times to limit crowding and lines this year.

 

How do I make an offline donation?
To send a donation by check, please complete this form and send it with your check to the address provided. Day of, you can bring cash/check donations to the blue pop-up tent on Lloyd Street, across from the food truck.

Are we still having a basket raffle?
UPDATE: Yes, there will be baskets, community organization tables, and other activities to enjoy at your own pace. Additionally, we will offer a VIRTUAL BASKET RAFFLE for two weeks following the event! Stay tuned for more.

How do I set up my personal fundraising page?

Are kids and pets allowed?
Our event is all-ages, and friendly, leashed dogs are welcome (you are responsible for them!). UPDATE: Be aware that therapy dogs will also be present at the Hope and Healing tent. Registered service animals are always welcome!

Is there a fundraising minimum?
No, but we strongly encourage each participant to set a minimum $150 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's work to stop suicide and receive the official walk t-shirt! If you reach $150 by Sept 18th, you can pick up your shirt at the blue pop-up tent on Lloyd Street.

Will there be food?
Local vendors Kornerstone Coffee and Queen City Foods will be set up throughout the event with portions of proceeds benefiting the Walk!

 

Can I get a lawn sign? We are "sold out"! We did a few rounds of sign orders over the summer and now out of stock. If you'd like flyers however, please let us know!

Where do I go when I get to Canalside?

Use the suggested parking info here and report to Lloyd Street - remember, pre-registered folks do NOT have to check in!

Where are we walking this year?
It will be a self-guided route this year along the Erie Canal Basin - maps and signage provided (subject to change). It is just under 2 miles in total. UPDATE: Download the detailed walk route HERE.

The Out of the Darkness Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
