Welcome to the Out of the Darkness Ocean City Walk
Important Event Updates
Because COVID-19 cases are rising in and around the Ocean City area, and in consultation with our partners the Worcester County Health Department, we have to change plans for the 2021 Ocean City Out of the Darkness Walk. We will not be hosting a traditional walk event on Sept 25th. Instead, we would like to offer several options below for all registered walkers to participate:
- Attend the Evening of Reflection on Friday, September 24th, at the Public Landing Pier in Snow Hill Maryland. The event begins at 6:00 pm, with a floating luminary launch on the Chincoteague Bay at 7:00pm. All luminaries will be provided, and are biodegradable. Participant numbers are limited to 50 and registration is required. You can also contact Lisa Shockley at email@example.com or (443)-754-9689 to register by September 18th.
- you can walk on September 25th with your team wherever you feel comfortable to walk e.g. the beach, local parks, your neighborhood etc. Or join us in Easton for a small walk event afsp.org/midshoremd. You do not have to register for this event, just email Area Director Kat Olbrich at firstname.lastname@example.org for awareness.
- if you would like to walk along the beach, pick-up beads and meet others, we invite you to join the AFSP Delaware team on September 12 at Rehoboth Beach Band Stand at 9 am. You do not have to register for this event, just email Area Director Kat Olbrich at email@example.com for awareness.
- you can also join any of the other 10 Maryland or 4 Delaware Out of the Darkness Walks happening in September and October. You do not have to change registration and can continue to fundraiser for the Ocean City Walk. Dates for the Maryland walks can be found at afsp.org/mdtogether and the Delaware walks are listed at afsp.org/delawarewalk. Please be aware that all walks will have staggered walk times and no traditional opening ceremonies.
You have until Sunday, September 26 at midnight to raise $150 to earn a Together to Fight Suicide shirt. Like last year, we will mail them to your home by early November. Every team that raises an additional $500 between August 6 and September 26, will have their Team Name printed on the back of the shirts.
If you plan to walk with a team and would like to have some honor beads, you can pick them up at the Worcester County Health Department in Snow Hill or we can mail them to you. Please email Area Director Kat Olbrich at firstname.lastname@example.org with the amount of beads needed and what colors. If you can pick them up, we will connect you with the team at the Health Department. If you want us to mail them, please include your address and allow at least 1 week for shipping. We will have honor beads at the Evening of Reflection on September 24th.

Activities of Hope and Healing
Losing someone to suicide or struggling with a mental illness can feel like no one understands what you are going through. Unlike other illnesses, it is difficult to look at someone and know their connection. There is an honor bead for everyone, whether you have lost a loved one, struggle personally, support a friend and/or family member, or all of the above. Learn more by watching our honor bead video.
The Out of the Darkness Experience is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental illness have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.
