The  Central Carolina Out of the Darkness Walk Planning Committee is honored to shine a light on those who have struggled with suicide during this year's luminaria event which will take place during the walk.

Be sure to purchase your luminaria before Friday, September 9th.
You can order your luminaria HERE!

When ordering your luminaria, please type your name in the name box and type the name of the individual you would like to honor/memorialize in the "add a message" box. Prior to the event, we will write the name submitted on your luminaria and place it at the walk before walkers arrive. We can only write one name on each luminaria, so if you would like to honor multiple people, please order separate luminarias for each individual.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a journey of remembrance, hope, and support. It unites our communities and provides an opportunity to acknowledge the ways in which suicide and mental health conditions have affected our lives and the lives of those we love and care about.

Become a Team Captain
Team Central

Our team captains lead their team to the finish line of walk day. Leading up to the walk, team captains will usually serve as the cheerleaders to encourage team recruitment and participation/fundraising. On walk day, the team captains will be recognized and honored.
 

Volunteer at the Event

Interested in joining the Central Carolina Out of the Darkness Walk Planning Committee or learning more about becoming a Day-of Walk Volunteer? Both types of volunteers are always needed and we cannot be successful without them! If you have a knack for organizing events/activities, are creative and connected to the community, or just have the desire to help the Central Carolina OOTD Walk flourish for years to come, let us know. If you have some time to spare before/after the walk (Sunday, September 25th), please consider being a Day-Of Walk Volunteer and helping us set-up and/or break-down the event.

Fundraise to Help #StopSuicide

Raise $150 by August 14th, 2022 to receive the official Out of the Darkness Walk t-shirt! Check out the additional fundraising recognition gifts HERE!

Donations can be made to a team as a whole, but the T-shirt and other incentives are based only on INDIVIDUAL fundraising.  

 

Fundraising Tips

Here are some ways to bolster your fundraising:
*Update your page and pic - if comfortable, share your story on your walk page. Help connect potential donors to your "why".
*Share your walker page on social media and send it through email to your family and colleagues.

*Make a self-donation. Those who make self-donations are more likely to reach their fundraising goal.
*Check to see if your workplace does matching gifts. Ask your HR rep. Let us know if you need help securing a matching gift from your employer.

*Are you artsy or have a special talent you can share with others? Create an incentive (i.e. Those who donate $50 to my walk page will receive a watercolor painting of a flower by yours truly).
*Maybe you're not artsy, but you're up for a challenge. Create a goal based on it (i.e. Once I raise $10,000, I will walk the Moutains-to-Sea trail).
*Utilize Participant Hub - there are so many incredible & creative ideas here! Glance at it and let your creative juices flow.
*Create a FB Fundraiser through your account or it will not connect to your page! This is super easy in the DonorDrive app btw (wink wink)

Get Involved with AFSP-NC in Other Ways

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is always busy in our state delivering programs, interacting with loss survivors, learning the latest science from the world's leading suicide researchers, promoting mental health and suicide prevention policies at the North Carolina General Assembly and at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and celebrating the successes that are possible through our outstanding volunteers. FAQs

Is there a registration fee?
No, there is no registration fee to participate. Though there is no registration fee, we encourage our walkers to have fun with FUNdraising. Our family and friends love to donate to charities that are important to their loved ones. Share your walker page and we're sure you'll raise money for this important cause.

Is there a fundraising minimum?
No, but we strongly encourage each participant to set a $150 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's work to stop suicide and receive the official walk t-shirt! Those that raise higher amounts are able to select from several different prizes once the fundraising season wraps up. 

Can I register at the Walk? Yes!  You can register in-person at the Walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

If I raise enough money, will my whole team get a shirt?
No. The event shirts are given only to individuals who raise $150. If your whole team wants a shirt, each member must raise $150.

Can I bring my dog?
You sure can! Just make sure your pup is friendly, leashed, and you clean up after them. We're looking forward to meeting your furry friend. Be sure to stop by our merch table to purchase a cute lifesaver bandana for your pup!

 

 

 

 

 

 

How do I make an offline (check/cash) donation?
To send a donation by check, please complete this form and send it with your check to the address provided.

Parking, route, and other info will be updated as we get closer to Walk Day.

Day-of Experience: Resources & Activities

 

On-Site Activities

Stop by the AFSP Store for merchandise, pick-up beads at the Honor Bead table, walk around the resource tables, toss a volleyball around with your team, share your story and hear stories from other walkers, and more!

 

Honor Beads

Honor Beads will be available on-site to show your connection(s) to the cause. This year, we will be premiering our new rainbow beads which represent the loss of a loved one who was a member of the LGBTQ+ community or support for someone who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

 

Hope & Healing

Share messages of hope and remembrance. We urge you to share your story with other walkers at the walk, and offer a listening ear to theirs. Many of our walkers identify our Out of the Darkness Walks as a significant part of their healing process and we want to ensure all walkers leave the walk feeling comforted and not alone.
