bold goal to reduce the suicide rate 20% by 2025.

On July 9, 2016, Jay Anthony Utz lost his battle with depression and untreated sleep apnea, and died at age 40.

Jay struggled with depression; however, he was so much more than his depression. He was more than a statistic. He was more than one event. Jay was brilliant, generous, funny, and fun. He was a beloved husband, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and a best friend. He was my favorite person, my confidante, and my co-conspirator for the 17 years we were together. He was the guy who could make me laugh so hard my sides would ache, and light up my world whenever I'd see him.  He's still my favorite person, and I miss him more than words could ever sufficiently describe.

On October 23rd, our team will walk to help increase awareness. We will walk to help remove the stigma associated with seeking treatment for mental health issues. We will walk because so many others cannot.

We walk as a reminder that those who have lost someone to suicide have also suffered a loss equal to any other loss - whether it's from disease, heart failure, cancer, etc. We're oftentimes denied the same support of our community due to the stigma surrounding our loved one's passing, because as a society we are hesitant to discuss mental health issues - to discuss suicide.

Let's change that starting today and each day moving forward.

Our loved ones will not be forgotten. They will be cherished - their names spoken, their lives celebrated. Jay will be remembered.

All donations are 100% tax deductible and will help bring AFSP one step closer to achieving their bold goal to reduce the suicide rate 20% by 2025.

You can also support us by registering to walk with our team - just click on the Team Page from the toolbar above, and then select the "join our team" button.  If you're on a mobile device, simply click on the team's name The "Jay" Walkers located beneath my name.
