Donation Questions

I received a donation offline, what should I do?
You can mail check and cash donations directly to AFSP and our staff will add the donation to your Memorial Fund page. Just complete an offline donation form and send the form and donations to the address on the form.

Who should I make my check out to?
Please make all checks payable to: AFSP or American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Is it necessary to send a separate offline donation form for each donation?
Yes, in order for a donation to be processed properly please send a separate completed offline donation form for each donation.

When I receive a donor's check, should I enter it online?
No. When you receive a donor's check, please mail it along with the offline donation form to the address on the donation form and we will add it to your Memorial Fund page for you.

How do I find out if my company matches employee donations to charitable organizations?
To increase your contribution through matching gifts, please visit our Matching Gift page and enter your company name to see if your company has a program in place. You can also contact your company's Human Resource department to determine if a matching gift program is in place and the procedure to match your gift.

An offline donation is not appearing on my Memorial Fund page. What should I do?
Due to the high volume of donations AFSP receives in the mail during specific times of year, please allow 2-3 weeks from the date that the donation is received to post to your account. We strongly encourage our donors to make online credit card donations, for the donation is processed immediately and is visible on the homepage shortly thereafter. If your donation does not post within this time frame, please email our Individual Giving Assistant, Michael Swyer, at mswyer@afsp.org.

Are donations tax deductible?
All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Do donors get a receipt?
Anyone who donates online will receive a receipt via email, or who includes their email address on an offline donation form. Those who donate $250 or more and do not have an email address will receive a copy of the receipt in the mail (receipts are sent at the end of every tax quarter). Those who donate online can log in to their accounts at any time a print a pdf receipt for donations given. The IRS accepts cancelled checks as a receipt for donations $249 and under.

A donor is requesting a tax ID number (or EIN number), what is that and how can I get it?
AFSP is recognized as a 501(c)3 not-for-proit organization by the federal government. The tax ID number or EIN number for AFSP is 13-3393329.

Where can I get a copy of the 501(c)(3) letter for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention?
