Walk to Fight Suicide

Many people’s introduction to AFSP comes through our Out of the Darkness Community Walks, taking place in cities nationwide. Through these events, those affected by suicide and those who support them raise awareness and much-needed funds for our mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide, strongly sending the message that suicide can be prevented and that no one is alone.

AFSP is dedicated to creating a culture that’s smart about mental health through education, loss and healing support, advocacy, and research. As a voluntary organization, our grassroots efforts engage families, mental health professionals, community and local business leaders, school administrators, and others interested in preventing suicide.

Join us for this FREE event featuring a live performance by Judah & The Lion, hosted in partnership with iHeart Media & DC101, to celebrate the official start of D.C.'s Out of the Darkness Walk season! DC101's Mike Jones will be broadcasting live from the event, and all registered Walk participants will receive a free drink ticket, have access to a complimentary buffet, and be entered to win exciting door prizes. Is there a registration fee?

No. There is no registration fee or fundraising minimum to participate.

We strongly encourage each participant to set a $150 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's work to stop suicide and receive the official walk t-shirt!

No, but we strongly encourage all participants to set a $150 fundraising goal to help support AFSP's mission, and so they can earn an official walk t-shirt!

Can I register at the Walk? 

Yes! You can register or donate in person at the Walk by scanning a QR code. Walk donations are accepted until December 31st.

What if it rains?

The event is rain or shine and would only be canceled in the instance of severe weather that would compromise the safety of our guests.

Is the event family-friendly?  

Yes! We will have games and activities to keep your little ones entertained. Please note that the pre-walk event is mostly in a grassy field, which can be challenging to navigate for some strollers. While the Walk route is paved and mostly flat, there may be unforeseen obstructions along the walk route beyond our control (e.g. construction detours). 

Are dogs allowed?

Yes! Friendly, leashed dogs are welcome.

Can I bring my own table, tent, or chairs to the event?  

No. However, you do have the opportunity to earn a team table and/or tent through AFSP-offered Team & Walker Rewards - 2024 Rewards Details Coming Soon!

We will have plenty of chairs at the event for those who need seating accommodations.

 

How do I make an offline donation?

To send a donation by check, please complete the Offline Donation Form and send it with your check to the address provided.

If I raise enough money, will my whole team get a shirt?

No. The event shirts are only given to individuals who raise $150 by the day of the event.

If your whole team wants a shirt, each member must raise $150

Any must-have items I should bring?  

We recommend comfy shoes, bug spray, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, offline donations (to be turned in), and cash or credit card to make a donation or purchase AFSP swag!

How do I change my team status?

If you're already registered and looking to create a new team or join an existing one, simply log into your account and click "change team membership".

VIEW EXAMPLE

If I come alone, will someone walk with me?  
Yes! We will have volunteer "Walk Buddies" ready to walk with anyone who does not want to walk alone or needs assistance navigating the walk route. You can identify "Walk Buddies" by their orange t-shirts that say "Walk Buddy."

Will there be mental health professionals at the event?  

There will be a "Care Team" of volunteer mental health professionals who will be on-site to talk to anyone who wants or needs support. You can find them in the "Hope & Healing" area or walking around the event. They will be wearing purple t-shirts that say "Care Team: Want to Talk?"

Will there be refreshments available?  
Complimentary water and light snacks will be provided for volunteers and registered participants only.

 

What is the Walk route?  

The Walk route is 1.98 miles, flat, and spans between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. See Walk Route with Turn-by-Turn Directions

Will there be restrooms on-site?  

Yes! There will be on-site porta potties available for registered walkers and volunteers. Also, there are restrooms located inside of the Lincoln Memorial which are open to the general public. 
What is the closest metro?  

What public transportation is available?  

The closest Metro stations are Smithsonian (1.2 miles away) and Foggy Bottom - GWU (0.9 miles away).  See the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's website for public transportation information and schedules.

What parking is available?  

Limited day-long parking is available along Ohio Drive, SW, or south of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Lots A, B & C. Downtown, private paid parking garages can be found north of the National Mall. Metered on-street parking is generally restricted to two hours (ticketing/towing enforced).

The areas for registration/check-in, opening/closing ceremonies, and Walk route are ADA compliant. However, some pre-walk event areas and activities are in a grassy field which may pose some accessibility challenges, especially if it has recently rained. Also, there may be unforeseen obstructions along the walk route beyond our control (e.g.: construction detours). See Walk Route with Turn-by-Turn Directions

An ASL interpreter will be on stage for the Opening & Closing Ceremonies.

Reserved seating will be offered in front of the stage for the Opening & Closing Ceremonies for those with accessibility needs. 

Walk Buddies will be available to accompany anyone who needs assistance navigating the walk route.
